It's only really hard if you make it so, imo.
Just understand they're two different people and just because they don't get along doesn't mean they can't both be good people. And Taylor didn't want this to start a "war" between fanbases, or for her fans to hate Katy. She just wants her fans to relate the song to their own friendships.
I like both as well. Katy is one of my top artists on Last.Fm
