What was the most difficult song to record on the LP?
It’s probably a toss up between “Promises” and “Eternal Sunshine.” “Promises” wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be, because I talk about my brother so much and I write so many songs about him that now it’s just become routine and therapeutic. But “Eternal Sunshine” made me reminisce. It made me think of good things, which kind of makes you sad. I talked about childhood things that are so nostalgic, that it kind of makes you sad.
What’s the next video we can expect and can you give us a little about the concept?
(Smiles as she debates on how much to reveal) I’m going to leave it as a surprise, but it’s definitely my favorite song off of the album. I’m just going to say... tropical.
That makes a lot of sense, coming from you (both laugh). That says everything.
(Laughs) That can be anything.
Right now, everyone’s coming to you for features because they know if you’re on the hook, it’s golden. Is there anyone you’re collaborating with that you can speak on that we wouldn’t really expect?
I think the Chris Brown one was something people didn’t expect. As of right now, I’ve just been promoting the album and working on the next one. I haven’t really done any other features. I would love to collaborate with John Meyer. He’s like one of my favorite musicians. I think that would be unexpected.
I’m trying to think now of what the two of y’all would sound like. It fits well, I think it’d be kind of dope.
It would be crazy. I already hear it in my head, so I know it would be cool. But yeah, nothing else so far that has actually happened.
You mentioned working on the next album. Is the aquatic theme something we can expect to just be on it? I feel like that’s going to be a very Jhené thing from now on.
Yeah, with Souled Out I think I took it to another realm. Almost a spacey place. When I talk about sailing, I’m actually talking about the cosmic sea. Which is another thing that I’ll get deeper into on the next album. I’ll talk more about the different elements, it’s not all about water. But it is a theme of sailing, which just means being free. It doesn’t have to mean being in a sailboat on water.
