Typically, the court grants, denies or defers the petitions it receives. The multiple same-sex marriage cases, however, create a unique situation.
With the marriage cases, the court could do a number of things after its Monday conference:
It could delay a decision until another one of its bi-weekly conferences to gather more information or wait for petitions in other cases around the country.
It could deny all the petitions, allowing appellate court decisions to stand. That would make same-sex marriage legal in Utah.
It could accept one or more of the petitions and keep the stays in other cases intact until issuing a ruling.
It could consolidate several cases.
A decision could come as early as Tuesday or in the next week or weeks.
"Unlike most petitions, one of these almost certainly will be granted. It's possible that they'll say no but very unlikely," Booher said. "The real question is whether they decide at this conference or defer deciding because they know more cases are in the pipeline."
Indiana, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Virginia, Utah have all petitioned the court to hear their case. In the event they don't take any gay marriage cases, the Circuit Court Of Appeals' ruling stands and the stays are automatically lifted allowing for immediate marriages to occur in the ENTIRE 4th/7th/10th Circuit.
Not expecting them to after Ginsburg said there was no rush.
To win, I think we might have to lose, the 6th has no decision yet and it might rule against us. The Supremes actually want a split because they like being the voice of reason. The 9th Circuit is on our side, the 6th is anyone's guess and the 5th I wouldn't be surprised if they ruled 3-0 against the couples.
BUT they might just deny everyone's petition making it legal by default. Then when there's a split they make a nationwide ruling for the rest of the states. Just imagine Westboro's heads exploding because they're in the 10th Circuit

A bit misleading no? Although a decision could possibly come within the next few weeks, decisions are not announced until June of the next year [earliest] (so in this case June 2015)

7 states petitioned and for each denial it would bring down the whole circuit since the Circuit Appeals Courts are the ones who issued stays waiting for the Supreme Court to say something. Supreme Court deciding not to look at a case dissolves the stay.
So if Utah was denied it would be legal right away in Utah/Wyoming/Kansas/Colorado for example.
I wouldn't be surprised if they ruled 3-0 against the couples.
