I think things like this (payola for the internet age, basically) are applicable to any social media site now, sadly.

not that I would do it, but aspiring musicians/bands, businesses? fake it till you make it! I think it's no big deal. You gotta do what you gotta do.

Starter-ups and newcomers should not do it. There's a certain line of integrity and dignity that is broken when you do something that fake and deceiving.

The issue with buying YouTube views is that YouTube has pretty complex countermeasures to combat bought views so paying for them is a waste of money.

When it comes to FB likes, it's all about giving the illusion that you're more popular than you are, but again it's pointless because your posts aren't being seen by that many people. Twitter is the same way. It's so suspect that a lot of our faves have tens of millions of followers yet don't get that many RTs and faves.

So, there we have th ereason why hundreds and hundreds of millions of people are watching the latest Lopez ****, yet ionly 5 people seek to buy the single, let alone the album!

I disagree. I don't think it's a big deal. I would never do it because I would want to know accurate #s of my progress but I don't knock people who do it. Now, once you've hit the ceiling there's really no reason to go through it other than being dishonest and greedy but to get yourself there faster, I don't think it's a problem as long as you don't solely rely on it.
