It should never be the main focus of a review, unless an album is a cheap and awful marketing scheme (Most pop albums are actually not in this vein - they may be generic and designed to be popular, but at the same time they can reflect an artist's style or opinions). That LA Times review specifically made very little effort in discussing the album musically.
This is the problem when gossipy tabloid writers think that they are also knowledgeable music critics.
