LIONEL RICHIE: 'MILEY CYRUS + BIEBER ARE AMATEUR AND WON'T LAST'

The singer says current music is theatrical but forgettable

Lionel Richie has criticised stars like Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber for failing to have a musical back-catalogue that's strong enough to back up their theatrics.

Speaking to The Evening Standard, the singer said: "The beautiful part of where we were - we had shock value. But what came with shock value was hit after hit after hit. Madonna was outrageous - but she had a catalogue of music that was unbelievable.

“At the end of all the theatrics with Michael [Jackson], he had nothing but the most fabulous catalogue. Now, we’ve got a lot of theatrics - but where’s the song that is going to stick around forever?"

He continued: “Twenty years from now, let’s take anybody - where’s the body of work? I’m going to judge you not by your popularity but by your longevity, your staying records. I’m thinking about Miley, Justin Bieber.

“We’ve made amateur music mainstream. There’s a difference between a stylist and a singer - everybody can sing! Go to karaoke - there are some guys seriously singing their asses off! But do they have a unique voice, or distinct voice?”

Not really a drag. He just wonders about the longevity/staying powers of Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. I don't think he means six to ten years of slaying like people here think longevity is. But the staying power of records, notoriety, etc. Yeah, they are questionable. I can't really see them touring and release a platinum album like Lionel did 30 something years into his career, but time will tell.

"Wrecking Ball" is like an instant classic though. And "We Can't Stop" & "The Climb" are A-grade pop songs. Miley has a distinctive voice.

I only read the quotes in the OP,but it's a typical generalization by someone who's prime is over. Some people just don't adjust well to change. It's like Norma Desmond syndrome.

He should be grateful that there are people in recent times who've sampled his music and technically carried his legacy, like my fave's song "I Like It".

You kind of destroy your own argument there. The so-called "artists" of today have to sample music from genuinely talented artists of yesteryear in order to have hits.

And while he may(or may not be) past his prime, that doesn't mean he doesn't have many legendary hits to his name, which are still known by millions of people 30-40 years later. As if anyone will still love songs by Bieber or Cyrus in 40 years. I think not.

The comparison just doesn't make sense. Richie released his debut album at age 33. Madonna debuted in her 20's.The fact he's comparing Michael Jackson and Madonna (both with 30+ years in the business and soldified legacies) to newcomers like Bieber and Miley (which got her first 1# album at age 14) says a LOT. They're still very young and we don't know what the future holds for them. Listen, I'm not saying "Baby" will be considered a seminal classic in 30 years but then again, the right song and album could change your career forever

Michael wasn't the oh-so-almighty King Of Pop before "Off The Wall" and Madonna was originally Grammyless (and deemed a "*****" / Bad role model). I'm pretty sure many people thought Cyndi Lauper would outlast her back then. By the way, Justin Bieber is not making music anymore, no idea why they keep bringing him up

and as for Miley, she's more talented (and astute) than people giving her credit for. We'll see.
