I hate Murder House it was my least favourite season, it was just so boring and drawn out. Towards the end I would google what happened before I watched an episode to see if it was worth my time.
Sarah Paulson and Jessica Lange are the only two names I know from that show BECAUSE of the masterpiece that is Asylum. Were the aliens dumb? Ridiculously. Was it still better than Murder House? Yes. Was it better than Coven? By MILES.
The second season has good directing, acting, and writing. Asylum deserves the hype. We had stronger characters, namely Lana, and strong setting. I love the scene where Jude is asked her name, and in her head she's singing and dancing and the room was spinning. That was so well done because of the acting was excellent, as was the direction which had me feel as though I were right with them in the asylum.
The weakest parts of the story were the opening as it wasn't a strong as I liked (plus Adam Levine...really? Shameless) alongside the alien plot line wasn't deeply explored either. Why was this thrown in? This could have been another season. There was a lot going on but it was handled really with care because there weren't 1D characters shoved down our throats every second and death seemed like a real fear, especially for our main character Lana, who the audience could really emphasize with because we aren't told about her suffering but were able to watch it.
MH is sinister, but it isn't perfect. None of the characters are as strong as Lana, but the writing is solid mostly. The season does seem like a re-telling of past horror movies, which I know was intentional, but at least it was re-told well. The family affairs thrown in with teen angst could have been very annoying, but instead we got to watch the family fall a part and it would have been just right...but the ending was pretty soft! It's too easy. So that was the solution to their issues? Because it seemed pretty simple. The resolution wasn't really solved. Okay your husband is a murderer and your daughter has mental health issues!! Oh, and so does the father!
No matter both are better than Coven. Coven is entertaining and the acting is good, but that doesn't mean the season was good. It was just bitch that, supreme that. 'I'n the next supreme.' 'No bitch, I am.' 'How about a crush you like a Twinkie and show you who's the real supreme, bitch?' 'Bitch you look like you eat 25 twinkies for a midnight snack. Bow down to your next supreme.' Could this have been real dialogue? Yes. None of the characters are well written and it just seems like they were given five minutes of thought before creation. 'Aha, we will make this bitchy witch! And another bitchy witch! And another, yes.' And Violet and whatshisname relationship was so.weak. Are we supposed to care? We didn't know who this boy was, other that his mother touched him, and that never went anywhere. Or the useless man candy neighbor who had his mother bleach his ***. Again, pointless. This season just threw everything at us and said to hell with common sense. A bitch supreme gon die this week? She gon back next week. At least with Asylum death was something to be afraid of and the things thrown at us weren't for the sake of it and seemed like genuine moments of inspiration.
TL;DR: MH had an easy ending. Asylum had the best characters. Coven was good for sassy quotations
I didn't care for Asylum my 1st time watching it, I thought it was too much, difficult to watch (the forced electro shock therapy/trying to de-gay Lana), and hated the aliens, but I recently rewatched it on Netflix and really loved it and now think its my fave Still don't care about the alien plotline though
