Apple was so pressed they tried (and failed) to drag the Nexus 7 live in their keynote.
Apple deserve this backlash, they really dished it out with that stupid Mac vs. PC advertizing campaign and to Android several times, now let's see if they can take it back.

Apple actually encouraged users to use Windows on Mac's

They weren't shading Microsoft at all.
Microsoft make the software, they didn't make the PC's.
And they didn't try to drag the Nexus 7. They said The iPad Mini doesn't stretch phone apps, but the Nexus 7 does. That is true. They were just saying they made apps for the iPad Mini, rather than stretching all the apps.
So they didn't fail doing anything. They just listed what one product did, and what the other did.
And again, they still encouraged people to buy and use Windows. In 2006, Mac's were simple Plug in and Start. For PC's, most of them still had Screens, Mouse, Keyboard, the actual Tower etc. sold separately, and you needed drivers for all of them to work.
The Mac just worked out of the box, and they specifically mention that they encourage Windows to be installed on Mac's.
And when Apple did target Windows Vista, they were basically only repeating what Microsoft was saying. If you don't like it, downgrade. And they were poking fun at how stupid that sounded.
That's the worst that Apple has done. And that was pre-iPhone almost a decade ago.
They didn't actually constantly try and drag everything about Microsoft as a company etc.
