(Reuters) - A man hiking in a heavily wooded area of northern New Jersey was killed by a black bear during the weekend, police said on Monday, in what experts called an extremely rare attack.
Darsh Patel, 22, of Edison, New Jersey, and four friends encountered the bear on Sunday afternoon in the Apshawa Preserve, about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of New York City, according to the West Milford Township, New Jersey, police department.
The bear began to follow the hikers and they scattered, police said in a statement. Four of them regrouped but Patel was missing and they contacted police, it said. Patel's body was found about two hours later.

If you are hiking in bear country consider carrying handgun, shotgun or rifle suitable for bears...
...such as a .44 Magnum...
...a heavy-caliber bolt gun...
...or a .45-70 lever-action...
In fact, remember that black bears are not very hard to kill. If it will take down a deer, it can take a black bear. It's the big brownies you really have to watch out for.
A handy firearm like a .30-30 Trapper...
...a 12-gauge with Brenneke slugs...
...a Glock 20...
...or a .357 revolver...
...with hard cast bullets...
...should be adequate for defense against most predators both 2 and 4-legged!
And also bear bells and bear spray you should already have, naturally. Those, and common sense, are your first line of defense. Guns are just in case the bear tries to eat you anyways!
