Nope. Could you grow and harvest fruit and vegetables in TS2 base Game? Nope. TS3 also gave you new control over your career&school by lettijg you choose whether they worked hatd, slacked off, talked to friends & you could actually see where you went to work/go to school, yea it was rabbit holes but it was still a cool feature that you couldnt do in TS2. The introduction of a much wider aspiration points store. The introduction of moodlets that let us see how our sik felt and how it affected the gameplay. You could go and visit your neighbour, the world around you grew with you, none of this happened in TS2 base game. TS3 was a leap foward, Ts4 may be a step foward with certain aspects of gameplay but compared to the other base games it seems like a step back. It will get better with EPs of course but we're comparin it to ither base games.

The traits were cool, but they didn't really effect the Sims overall. They mostly just changed the Moodlets, which again. They improved it in The Sims 4 by directly affecting your Sims, and you are able to have up to 12 traits in The Sims 4 as well.
The Sims 4 goes even further with Gardening as well.
Seeing where you went to work is nice, but it wasn't game changing. After the first time, there's no real wow factor. It's just something to look at.
I do like the Work Hard/Slack Off feature, but The Sims 4 has that as well. Visiting Neighbours is great also, finally had that ability. It felt long overdue.

I feel like those are all nice additions rather than new core gameplay elements (Moodlets and Traits are Core Gameplay and obviously The Sims 4 takes them to new levels). But like comparing Job Promotions in TS3 > TS4 or Children getting better at school, throwing Parties, Weddings etc. Have all so much depth into them, that the previous games never had.
I think the main problem with The Sims 4 is that it takes all the core "Sims" features and takes them deeper than the other games. But by doing that, they didn't really bring anything new to the table.
The Sims 4 is kinda less about expanding the franchise and sort of more adding depth to the current system. Like The Sims 3 Lifetime Aspiration has one goal, where this has like 10 goals etc.
