Hello there ATRLers
Do you have any triggers? On Tumblr I recently saw a post about trigger warnings and Googled what a trigger was.
If you don't know, this is what a trigger is
Quote:
A trigger is something that sets off a memory tape or flashback transporting the person back to the event of her/his original trauma.
Triggers are very personal; different things trigger different people. The survivor may begin to avoid situations and stimuli that she/he thinks triggered the flashback. She/he will react to this flashback, trigger with an emotional intensity similar to that at the time of the trauma. A person’s triggers are activated through one or more of the five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell and taste.
The senses identified as being the most common to trigger someone are sight and sound, followed by touch and smell, and taste close behind. A combination of the senses is identified as well, especially in situations that strongly resemble the original trauma. Although triggers are varied and diverse, there are often common themes.

So do any of you have them? And if so what happens when you are "triggered" if you don't mind me asking. I am curious.

Yes, when people tell me how me eating a burger triggers them because it invokes vivid flashes of their pig charlie being slaughtered when they were 3 and a half.

But wouldn't talking about triggers in turn trigger people? There's none I'd want to talk about

No, and neither do you. yet again, Tumblr is taking a very serious matter and trying to be trendy. Speaking as someone who knows people with actual triggers, this is simply offensive.
If you actually have PTSD and have actually been diagnosed, then I apologize, but I doubt more than most of tumblrs demographic has truly been through any serious trauma. Yes, there will be some with actual triggers who don't have means of getting evaluated, and I have the utmost sympathy for them, but the vast majority of people talking about it simply have a guilty conscience; it is called regret, not a trigger.
Self diagnoses aren't cool; you don't have OCD, you don't have PTSD, and you don't have depression unless you actually get evaluated by a trained professional, Fact. Trust me, I would still be on my Psychology Major if it was in demand enough for 3/4 of Tumblr users who are mentally perturbed.
The same thing happened with cultural appropriation, thin-priveledge, fat shaming, **** shaming, and feminism. The overwhelming majority of that site is just a cesspool for ignorance.
EDIT: (The use of "you" in the thread isn't me attacking anyone in this thread particular, but rather a broad, blanket term. Additionall spelling errors corrected and some rephrasing for better clarity.)

Quoting in case people scrolled past it! So true. I'm so sick of Tumblr users taking serious issues and using them to get pity points. It's gross.

No they are for stupid attention seeking people. Like thinking they are a special little snowflake because they get offended and upset easy. I bet they have no friends.

FFS a "trigger" is not something that makes you remember something, it's something that makes you completely lose your mind and feel really unstable and crazy. Smelling a fragrance and being reminded of an ex or something is not a "trigger".

90% of the people on Tumblr that talk about triggers fall under what you just described, but you're indirectly describing people with PTSD as having no friends. Just because a bunch of losers cry wolf doesn't mean that people with real problems need to be disregarded too.

I mean the internet concept of triggers and trigger warnings. I have never seen any genuine person with PTSD use them.

Now, I'm pretty sure I don't have PTSD, but there's this thing on the internet that everytime i see it or anything slightly similar to it (or I hear something about it) i'm triggered and i get really freaked out, i scream a bit and then can't be in the dark alone and closing my eyes sucks too...oh lort the first few nights after i saw it were horrifying
I've had several dreams about seeing it again,, and they're never fun, dd i'm scarred for life probably
I avoid several places where i can see it + anything related to a lot too
And it's the dumbest thing, I can't even spill what it is so please don't ask
