The way Gaga's sales trajectory has been going, and considering she seems interested in exploring new genres, you have to wonder if she really is this generation's Cyndi Lauper

She could be but I don't think that is a negative thing at all. Cyndi achieved success in other ways and chose from the start to make unfriendly radio music after her second album (though, no shade, Born This Way is not really a radio friendly album either save a few hits). The big difference, imho, is that Gaga managed to keep herself relevant through other factors. She still has one of the best selling fragrances ever, done sponsorships with Versace, and formed alliances early on with legends like Elton John (and Madonna at one time). Cyndi chose to 'fade' away to do her own thing, whereas I don't think Gaga is down with that. She's going to spend every dime she has if she ran out of her labels money if it meant advertising and showcasing her music somewhere for everyone to see.

I don't think Cyndi chose to fade away. I just think she was just willing to ditch commercial successful for her art, kind of what Gaga is doing. She chose to go the punk/alternative route in the 90s and start writing more mature lyrics instead of making radio friendly pop music, and unfortunately the commercial success never followed and people stopped caring about her.
That seems to be what Gaga is doing, but I agree Meowster. I think unlike Cyndi, Gaga can find a way to do that and still be commercially successful and culturally relevant.
I also think it's ironic how Cyndi's most successful album since the 80s was a jazz album (that featured a duet with Tony Bennett)

In all fairness though, Madonna can't really sing either
But Madonna was very much in control of her career and was the creative force behind nearly everything, which is why Katy could never be the next Madonna.

Y'all should check out Cyndi's three albums post True Colors. REAL Artpop.
Also, Gaga had too high of a peak to ever disappear. Cyndi never really had a "peak." She just had huge hits. She wasn't the Madonna before Madonna, she was just a fun girl that made fun music and kept pursuing the music she wanted to make. It also helps that Gaga latched on to the Little Monster moniker even if it alienated a lot of people. Her sales are gonna stay pretty consistent until if/when the regular public as a whole check for her again. I mean, no shade, but they kinda just did with Applause which was in the top ten for how long? Sure, it was no Roar, but things are nowhere near as grim as ATRL leads you to believe (and even non-lead singles can revive an artist: Nicki Minaj just flopped with Pills N Potions but came back stronger than ever with Anaconda).
Now if her next lead single doesn't make it to the Billboard Hot 100, then we have real concern to worry.

There isn't a Madonna this generation. Gaga came close, got burned, and is now doing her own thing. It is an insult to Madonna's name to compare her to Katy (whom I still do respect as an artist). No one is doing what she did back then.
Moments like the vomit performance in Swine remind me why I truly love this classy bitch.

It'll be exciting to see where Gaga goes from here. I really hope she comes back with a smash lead single, something unique that no one would expect. I'm really glad she said C2C is the end of the first part of her career, because she really needs to move in a new direction and start fresh. I will honestly be extremely disappointed if we get another dated EDM track as her next lead single.

People who use the Cyndi thing as some sort of insult need to look up on who exactly Cyndi is and what she has accomplished. Gaga would probably love a career like Cyndi's (even though she's sold more).

Not saying Gaga is this gen's Madonna, God forbid, but Madonna was burnt several times so that only makes the comparisons more valid.

I've always thought it was interesting how M always kinda lagged behind her peers in terms of success and sales aside from her peak with True Blue and Like A Prayer.. but always was an underdog and never strayed. Most people in the 90s would have definitely thought that Whitney Houston or (especially) Mariah Carey would have been the new Queens with their #1 instant success.
It's sorta another parallel but that's just my opinion. I don't think Gaga really wants that path anymore (one wonders if she ever truly did? It seems like it was Boomkack was the one that wanted her to start doing Madonnaisms circa Alejandro/Born This Way releases).

I mean, Cyndi was ahead of her time for most of her career, and you gotta respect her musical ambitions and thirst for exploring genres and creating her own path, but in all honesty, she hasn't accomplished a whole lot since her third album. Her sales were the pits throughout the 90s and early 2000s compared to her multi-platinum albums of the 80s (not even cracking 100k after selling 6 million is, well, awful). So I can understand where people are coming from, but still, I have HUGE respect for Cyndi, and if Gaga were to follow a similar path, my respect for her would only grow immensely.

It is kind of interesting how people don't even consider Mariah for the title of Queen of Pop, yet she has had smash hit after smash hit after smash hit throughout her career while Madonna has had mostly modest hits with a few smashes sprinkled in.
Goes to show hit singles aren't the only thing people base their opinions on.
If people didn't consider Mariah Carey the queen of pop in the 90s, would people really consider Katy Perry the queen of pop now? Not a chance.

This Cyndi talk is making uncomfortable... It's kinda depressing (especially when you read it while listening to Lana's music).
I don't want Gaga to become the 'whatever 2.0', she's The Only Lady Gaga (Yes, Troy, you heard me. You won't make Lady Gaga 2.0) She's achieved so much only in 6 years, almost outdoing Madonna award-wise (It's not like Beyoncé hasn't already, lol). + She's sold 110M records, and topped $400M career-tour gross, etc...
She just needs a unique-sounding smash lead single, and she'll be fine.
Now, let me continue listening to Lana. "I will love you till the end of time, Gaga. I would wait a million years. Promise you'll remember I'm your stan"

This is like the first time ever creating a thread to drag Bey but her fans are really something else
I usually defend her but they always come for Gaga, so they deserve it
