[50] ARTISTS STAND UP TO CANCER, "JUST STAND UP"
We begin the countdown with one of the best collabrations of the year. Featuring the vocals of an all-star group of pop/R&B/rock/country performers including Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Natasha Bedingfield, Leona Lewis, and lots more, this song was used as a charity single for "Stand Up to Cancer" for the benefit of cancer patients in the US. A good song with a good meaning for a good cause. "Just Stand Up" kicks off the countdown at #50.
Best line: The heart is stronger than you think. |
[49] CHRISTINA AGUILERA, "KEEPS GETTIN' BETTER"
Next up is a song that talks about being a super-bitch, Christina's "Keeps Gettin Better." She mentioned in an interview that she realizes the strength of a woman - running a business and pursuing a career after having her own child are "super" abilities. Then she added, "Those things come with being labeled a bitch. If that's what I'm gonna be called by being assertive and knowing who I am and what I want out of life, then so be it. I will wear that label proudly. For me it's about turning that word into a positive."
Best line: Some days I'm a super bitch, up to my old tricks but it won't last forever. |

[48] LINKIN PARK, "LEAVE OUT ALL THE REST"
At #48 is a song with working titles "Fear" and "When My Time Comes." Became a huge hit July of this year, the song is a sort of confession (possibly to a friend or loved one) and an attempt at redemption. The lyrics speak of someone who's made some poor choices in the past and wronged others and that he fears condemnation. From the "Minutes To Midnight Album," we have "Leave Out All The Rest" by Linkin Park.
Best line: I cant be who you are. |
[47] NE-YO, "CLOSER"
"Closer" marks a musical departure for Ne-Yo, taking on a dance pop style over the more rhythmic and urban sound his songs usually possess. In the song, Ne-Yo sings of having an urging attraction to a woman he sees, having the desire to "come closer" to her. His attraction to her becomes stronger, and almost hypnotic-like, as he sings "And I just can't pull myself away, under a spell I can't break. I just can't stop." This Billboard Top-Tenner is this year's #47.
Best line: Own me, to control me. Come closer, come closer. |

[46] JORDIN SPARKS, "ONE STEP AT A TIME"
Jordin is up next. This is her 3rd platinum single from her self-titled album, which received outstanding reviews from Chuck Taylor at Billboard and Entertainment Weekly. Video shows Sparks touring around the city as other people are going through different moments. Different scenarios play out including guy picking up his date for prom, a teenager teaching his little brother to skateboard, a boy and a girl selling lemonade, a young woman at her first day of college and a group of teenagers taking care of a garden. "One Step At A Time" is song #46.
Best line: The only way to get there is one step at a time. |

[45] THE RED JUMPSUIT APPARATUS, "DAMN REGRET"
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus comes in at #45. This is their unofficial 5th single from their Gold Album "Don't You Fake It." One of the standout rock songs for the year. "Damn Regret" is at #45.
Best line: Empowered by adrenaline feel like I'm born again. |
[44] FALL OUT BOY, "BEAT IT"
In 2007, Fall Out Boy began covering "Beat It" and performed the song during the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. The band also played it for the 2008 New Year's Party on the U.S. television network FOX. In February 2008, the band released a studio version of "Beat It" featuring John Mayer playing the guitar solo part on their live album, Live in Phoenix, and was released as on official single available only through digital download. This Michael Jackson original is at #44 on the Yearender Countdown.
Best line: Don't wanna see no blood, dont be a macho man. |

[43] DAVID COOK, "THE TIME OF MY LIFE"
2008 was a great year for new singers. And what better way to be discovered than through a talent search. The artist at #43 won the season 7 of American Idol, and this song is his coronation song that won out of thousands of entries in a songwriting competition. This song was released as a digital download after the season finale and received tons of attention and airplay. "The Time of My Life," a song written by Regie Hamm performed by David Cook settles for #43.
Best line: More than a name or a face in a crowd. |
[42] BRITNEY SPEARS, "PIECE OF ME"
"Piece of Me" by Britney comes in at #42. The song was recorded in response to the constant media scrutiny and sensationalism of her private life. In a radio interview with Ryan Seacrest, Spears said about the song: "Wherever you go, there's a lot of people who ask questions, and sometimes you don't know their intentions and stuff like that. So, it's kind of a cute way of putting it out there. You know, like, 'You want a piece of me?', you know, in a cool, cute and clever way."
Best line: I'm Mrs. most likely to go on the tv for strippin' on the streets. |

[41] NE-YO, "MAD"
Moving along we have a song that has a very interesting music video, Ne-Yo's "Mad." In the video, Ne-Yo attempts to make up with his girl, but his efforts are proving to be easier said than done. After they argue in the beginning, Ne-Yo goes outside to cool, but ends up rushing to save a little kid from being hit by a car. A loud crash occurs, and Ne-Yo is seen standing near the site while the neighbors cry. Throughout the video Ne-Yo is shown with his girlfriend, but they aren't talking. She is constantly crying. In the end, it is revealed that Ne-Yo was the one hit, and his ghost was watching over his girlfriend. This ties in with the song meaning, they didn't have time to make up before "he went to bed", or in this case, death. I have to say the "death" theme never really came to my mind before watching the video. LOL.
Best line: Girl I dont wanna go to bed mad at you. And I dont want you to go to bed mad at me. |
