Australia has raised its terror alert level to "high" for the first time since the national alert system was introduced in 2003.
According to the four-level system, a reading of "high" means a terrorist attack "is likely"; however, the country's Prime Minister Tony Abbott said no specific threat had been made.
"This does not mean a terror attack is imminent, we have no specific intelligence of particular plots. What we do have is intelligence that there are people with the intent and capability to mount attacks," Abbott said at a press conference in Canberra on Friday.
Oh I don't know, may the fact that 4 of the most liveable cities in the world are in the top 10 from Australia? Or maybe the fact that Melbourne has been ranked the most liveable city for 4 years in a row?
Its all apart of a from of scare tactics on the Australian public so they support they support the war in Iraq and others in the middle east
This wouldn't surprise me actually. We have conservatives in power atm. They only got elected like a year ago. Our Prime Minister's popularity has been nosediving ever since he was elected. But being a strong figure in the face of terrorism seems to be the only thing helping him. His popularity increased after the MH17 disaster - Australia had the most victims after the Netherlands, and it was the deadliest terrorist attack on Australians after the 2002 Bali Bombings. Then on top of that, there's this whole threat of ISIS.
In the 12 months since he's been elected, I can't even begin to tell you how much national defence advertising has increased. It's relentless and it's EVERYWHERE. Seriously, in the past 12 months since the conservatives got into power, it's been impossible to watch TV without seeing at least one (but usually two) of these sorts of ads:
Other Australians will probably agree with me, and think "actually yeah, those ads have been everywhere in the past year..."
The recruitment advertising seems to be working too. So many guys I went to high school with, and had no idea what they wanted to do, are now enrolled in the army and the navy. I suppose I am do, but only in the sense that I argue with other gay boys over how fierce Britney Spears and Rihanna are

This fear campaign is out of control. It's all propaganda to get the public on side to put troops on the ground again and it's working, the public are eating it up. My sisters fiancé is high up in the police force and yes, while they are watching certain groups for suspected terror links, it's nothing like what the media is making it out to be.
Y'all can calm down, we are in no danger. The bittys on ACA last night who were going to 'buy a dog for protection' and who are 'too affraid to leave the house' can rest easy

Don't buy a dog for protection, you can't rely on them unless they're trained. I had a bull terrier who looked mean but would just hide behind your legs at any sign of trouble.
Normally you would want a pump-action shotgun but unfortunately they are a Category C weapon in Australia (effectively banned for most folks). The next best thing might be a pump-action rifle such as the Remington 7615P.
Easier to obtain would be a Category A weapon, the best would be a double-barreled 12-gauge coach gun like a Stoeger or Cimarron.
Any of these should provide good protection from a random public beheading in the name of the Islamic State.

Any excuse to post about guns, and in such detail with pictures (I have shot a similar gun in the 2nd pic on my grandpas farm years ago. The force knocked me to ground )
A damn dog regardless the breed or even a gun won't save you from a legit terrorist attack. The bomb explodes before you get the chance to react.
