Courtney Act, Willam and Alaska 5000 for American Apparel
Quote:
The drag queens are the faces of a limited series of concert tees.
Starting Sept. 29, Alaska, Courtney Act, and Willam Belli will appear on a line of ‘80s-inspired concert T-shirts for American Apparel.
The limited series of glam-rock tees — only 500 of each are being produced — are inspired by the clothing brand’s initial partnership with artist Petra Collins for the “Support Artists, Support Ethical Manufacturing” campaign, where Collins’ artwork was printed on a series of T-shirts.
The partnership with the three former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants came about when Jonny Szymanski, a.k.a. Johnny Makeup, worked with Courtney and Willam on the online makeover series, Transfashionable. “It was only natural to get them involved with American Apparel,” Szymanski tells Out. And being self-proclaimed “huge fans” of Alaska, they added her to the campaign. “You know what they say, three’s a charm!”
The collection is meant to celebrate each drag queen’s talents and allure. And each shirt reflects each performance artist’s signature style: Alaska, a mix of Divine and Marilyn Monroe; Courtney Act channels Debbie Gibson with some serious edge; and Willam Belli is a glam-rock *****.
Currently the line is limited to T-shirts, but there’s always room to expand the partnership. “I wanted to do a beach towel so people could lay on me,” Willam says. “Maybe if they buy enough shirts we’ll get the towel, too.”
Check out all three designs that will be available in stores and online starting Sept. 29:
