FBI to investigate the NFL
Quote:
The NFL announced Wednesday night it has hired former FBI director Robert S. Mueller III to lead an "independent" investigation into the league's pursuit and handling of evidence in the Ray Rice domestic violence case. Here's a rundown of what's next:
What is Mueller investigating?
Based on the wording of the announcement, it's all about the tape, posted Monday by TMZ.com, that shows Rice punching his then-fiancée in the face. Commissioner Roger Goodell has said that was the first time the league saw it. But a law enforcement official told the Associated Press he sent the tape to an unnamed NFL executive five months ago. Phone records may reveal who placed the outgoing call from a number at the league office and left the 12-second voicemail played for the AP in which a female voice expresses thanks and says, "You're right. It's terrible." If it's determined the league didn't have the video, the question will be, did NFL officials do everything they reasonably and legally could to get it?
