You are right. Which means there is more to power than just success.
Lady Gaga is the most successful musician in the past 6 years.
No one has sold more albums than her, sans Adele (in the last 6 years ONLY).
No one has sold more singles than Gaga (Maybe Rihanna is a tie).
No one has grossed more than Gaga (not even Beyonce)
No one has won more awards than Gaga in the last 6 years.
No one has been more talked about than Gaga in the last 6 years..
No one has been more powerful than Gaga in the last 6 years besides Oprah Winfrey. Gaga was 2 times in top 10 Most powerful women in the world. She's been top 5 most powerful celebrities in the world for 4 years in a row (one time number 1 and 2 times at number 2 I think)
A lot of power comes from all that. She is the most successful musician of the last 6 years when you round it up..
Gaga's also economically powerful. Gathering a total 600 f***ing million (that keeps on increasing) from tours and selling nearly nearly 80 million from albums alone SHOWS so much power to me. Proof of power is that Diamond award. Not to mention she's also politically powerful, since she is a spokesperson and has met with Obama regarding LGBT issues.
In ha flop era, she is still the most discussed person.
Yes, of course. I never said she wasn't economically powerful though. I said judging power based on social alone is silly.
Since this is as of March 2014 it basically downplays Shakira's (as well as Rihanna) impact this year since her most viewed video was released on January 30, 2014 (Can't Remember To Forget You). Why didn't they track from the beginning of the year? Shakira also became the most liked/followed person on Facebook this year & her views for La La La/Dare were also very impressive. The only thing that she lacked this year (which would've placed her higher on the list) was a tour since she became pregnant again. This isn't really all that relevant since it is only counting less than half of the year & the field isn't leveled (i.e. some of the artists on the list didn't release albums, some didn't tour, some didn't release new videos, etc.).

Even with Shakira's success this year is she really that powerful? She's well liked and popular but I don't see her having that much power aside from that. She may have compelled some people to eat yogurt and then brush their teeth but… Gaga certainly is more powerful.
Power is when one can match or surpass their competition with significantly less effort. In the case of popstars, it would be helping ratings of shows without their presence there at all, selling an album without any promotion or push, a presence in media without any social media scandal, expanding their brand outside what they're known for, making comparable/more money as the "in" popstars when they're in their down period or past their peak etc. etc. etc.
