Discussion: Why did Carly Rae Jepsen flop?

Call Me Maybe kept her from being taken seriously as an artist, as shown by Mr. Link and Prometheus's extreme hatred for her on this site and the fact that borntodie didn't give her a chance until much later.
Plus it didn't help that her label released This Kiss over Curiosity and Turn Me Up. Trying to make her appeal to teens was just a mess. It's just as messy as Colton Haynes's promo team removing all the homoerotic pics of him on here because his demographic is supposed to be "teen girls". Long story short, teen girls ruin everything

Again people cared enogh about her when CMM was smashing enough to buy it's follow up.
After CMM started dying the only thing left that could save her was the JB duet.

Not suprised album did well in Japan, Korea..., this is what they like. To debut with 46k in the US after having the biggest digital single of all time is a joke tho.

Hmmm spill it

"Good Time" went top ten in South Korea, Japan and other countries of that continent.
Also sold over 200k in South Korea alone good for non-native artist and is also platinum in Japan.
CMM isn' the best selling digital single of all time.
"Kiss" sold 250k in Japan alone and was one of the best sellin albums there in 2012 and 2013 (google oricon Best sellin albums 2012 & 2013).
Also sold over 60k in the phillipines (four times platinum there.)
oh and Good Time was one of the biggest hits of 2012 and it wasn't local.

Call Me Maybe overshadowed everything about her. Nobody ended up caring enough to check out her other songs.

She's too avant garde for the GP. They just didn't "get" her artpop. Basically she's Grimes but with better enunciation and sings.
In fact, for an experimental indie album, Kiss performed incredibly well.

This Kiss wasnt all that great, and the potential hit "Tonight Im Getting Over You" got poor promo because she thought touring with Bieber was somehow more important than getting herself a career

When did she flop though. Her last era was successful and she hasn't had a new era yet!?

This is all because that song didn't allow her to shine. I've come across her Canadian Idol audition and I know that she is talented, but that didn't emerge from the song. If I didn't find that video by chance I would've thought that she was an average artist who barely cared about her music. This is how I know

uh what? "Call Me Maybe" is the main reason of most of her success, it basically had enough power to gave her another global hit and helped the album sell on markets where it was smashin when it was released (Japan or any asian country)

Because she's a talentless one hit wonder whose only hit is long forgotten

Like Katy, Kesha, and Gaga, Carly isn't a real pop girl. She's a folk singer at heart and it shows badly when she isn't performing acoustically. All the other girls are better at pretending to be Pop girls.

I think he meant as an artist in her own right. The sing overshadowed her and her considerable talents as a singer and lyricist. Everyone just kind of forgot about the artist behind the sing.

She didn't come up with a brand or a style. It was just "singing girl" and in 2012-14, you have to be so much more than that.
She didn't have a good team. She should have come up with a style and a brand to market herself to the GP. On top of that, I don't even know how hard she tried. You constantly hear about Beyonce's work ethic, and all these people who are on top, how they work their arses off. With Carly, I don't know how hard she would have pushed everyone around her. I can just imagine her being a good girl, going to meetings at her label, listening to her management and saying "yeah that's great!" to everyone around her, rather than pushing people around her and saying "no, this is what I want."
On ATRL, we also talk about how our faves are often "assertive" and how we as a society mistake assertiveness for being a bitch (Nicki, Ariana, Madonna, Rihanna, Mariah, Katy, Gaga, etc) and I don't think Carly was assertive enough. I think she was too sweet - sugar and spice and all things nice.

Call Me Maybe was a BLESSING and a CURSE to her.
Blessing coz the song is a WW Hit
Curse coz the public expected her to release singles that could be like the next CMM but she ended up releasing This Kiss and Tonight I'm Getting Over You which is not quite original or good and I guess that cemented an image of hers that she can only release generic tracks and people didn't took her music or her artistry seriously because of it.

People loved that catchy gimmicky single. They didn't love the artist.
