Not only sexuality but other things as well. People develop a cosy picture and don't want it changed 10 years later! It's not fair to the reader IMO.

Yeah, she should have revealed it in-book, but then again it wasn't really plot relevant. Also, it was only like a year later. And the 'cosy pictures' people had of him had nothing to do with his sexuality, or his 'straightness'. It's not like she portrayed him as straight then did a switcheroo. He was always gay, people just assumed he was straight because the default sexuality in fiction is straight. If finding out he was gay ruined their cosy picture, then, well, they shouldn't have assumed otherwise, and they have to deal with the fact they liked a gay character. It's plenty fair to the reader: his sexuality doesn't affect his personality or his actions in the books, nor should it alter anyone's opinion of him. If it does, they're homophobic, and JK ain't give a ****.
