I adopted my pets, mainly coz I couldn't stand the thought of that pup and playful kitten not finding someone (and then being put to sleep ).

I understand people who buy them (usually they want a particular breed), but getting a little mutt or cat from the pound is one of the best things one can do.

I guess it depends on where you live. Where I live for kittens it's ~100 and for older cats it's 50-80 dollars so it's not expensive at all. The prices for puppies in my local pet store is 1,000-3,000 dollars

adopting is a much better thing to do but it's not like you're a terrible person or anything if you don't

it's pretty bad when people buy rather than adopt because they think shelter animals are dirty or beneath them or something though :/

Oh, I don't know anyone that buys from pet stores. My dad found local breeders and we got our dog for very little money. He's been really good and has had no health issues. Our last dog was a collie though, which are, like, impossible to find in a shelter anywhere, and my mom was adamant so he was bought at breeders for a looooot of money.

Obvs talking about common pets like dogs and cats and yeah I can understand if anyone is looking for a certain race because of the space they have available for it to live or any other particular reason but when you have the chance to help and give a home to a dog why not do it?

I bought my dog cause my mom wanted a specific breed we couldn't find in shelters so we had to go to a breeder and our other dog she bought from someine else who was going tp put her to "sleep" if she couldn't find a home for her and I adopted my cat from a shelter.... I guess it depends on situations..


but I prefer adopted cause my cat came all vaccinated and has a microchip so if we lose her... we can track ha down

Really, tho… I'd rather pay to adopt.

Pets are too expensive to buy anyways. I got my cat for free from a friend when her cat had kittens.

I'd adopt if/when I get a dog for myself.

Growing up, my older brother wanted a specific breed (Shetland Sheepdog) and my parents bought him from a breeder. Wasn't elitist in the slightest, just he wanted a dog like Lassie but had to get one that's smaller. He's been amazing and I can understand people who get attached to specific breeds.

I picked up a cat from the street and she had kittens so I had them for awhile.
Found them all homes and kept one kitten who is everything now 2.

I always, always adopt my dogs. There are millions of beautiful cats and dogs in desperate need of a home.

I'm not opposed to buying dogs though if you get them from reputable breeders, especially if you're looking for a specific breed. It's difficult to find, say, a purebred French bulldog or Dalmatian in a shelter. But you should NEVER buy cats or dogs from pet stores.

Um apples to oranges much? Of course dogs are gonna be more expensive than cats.

I don't think it's wrong at all but I'd rather promote adopting dogs/cats over buying them. What's really wrong is people breeding the mom with her sons and using her like a breeding machine. You should be very careful when buying purebred dogs cause a lot of them can have genetic disorders and diseases from being breeded within the bloodline. My family adopted our little mutt and she's one of the best dogs someone could get. RARELY barks, very nice and so easy going. I love mixed dogs because they're so unique and get characteristics from both types of dogs. <3
