Ukraine isn't a big market at all, they might have 50 million people but the average person in Ukraine earns 15x less than the average Dutch. But when they wanted to sign a trade agreement, Russian basically gave them money in return for Ukraine not signing it, which caused protests from the pro-Europeans, which then made the Russians feel the need to 'protect the Russians in Ukraine' by doing what they're currently doing.
