Aussie man wakes up from coma, speaks Mandarin fluently
Quote:
MELBOURNE, Australia – A 22-year-old Australian man who has been in coma for more than a week after he met a car accident two years ago was reported to have been capable of speaking only in Mandarin immediately after waking up.
Ben McMahon from Melbourne still remembers that the moment when he woke up from coma, he saw a nurse who appears to be Asian, based on her looks, standing next to his bed.
“Most of it’s hazy, but when I woke up seeing a Chinese nurse, I thought I was in China,” Ben said in a report. “It was like a dream. It was surreal. It was like my brain was in one place, but my body in another. I just started speaking Chinese — they were the first words that left my mouth.”
Ben’s parents and his doctors were bewildered with his newly-found language skill. It even took him three days to be able to recall his English language.
“Neither of us can speak Mandarin so we just nodded, but deep down quite concerned about what’s going on,” his parents claimed.
“I wasn’t consciously thinking I was speaking Mandarin, it was what just came out and it was what was most natural to me,” Ben said.
Reports said Ben is not the first to experience this case.
A Croatian girl, 13, woke up and had her native language replaced with German in 2010.
Most recently, a U.S. navy shared the same case when he was found unconscious inside a motel room in July 2013. He had no idea of his identity and he spoke Swedish fluently.
