As a singer who came out publicly before the release of his debut album — which includes love songs written from the point of view of a gay man — Sam Smith is blazing a trail as an out gay singer currently enjoying massive mainstream success. However, that doesn’t mean the young superstar is interested in being a spokesperson for all queer people.
“I'm not trying to be a spokesperson,” he told Digital Spy during a recent interview. “It sounds awful of me, but I'm really just trying to live my life and write music about it. That's what I do. I'm not trying to heal the world. From a young age I've always been like this, so it's been normal. My family and friends have made it feel normal and I'm not going to stop that now.”
He didn't say anything wrong.
But I wonder how people would react if someone said they didn't want to be a black spokesperson, a spokesperson for feminism, a spokesperson for transgender people.
People will think he is going against the gay community, but he is doing quite the opposite. He is trying to normalize the gay community.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Once someone comes out as anything, people expect them to be a spokeperson/role model for that type of person and it's annoying. Just because someone is gay, that doesn't mean that they're automatically a spokeperson for gay people. Just because someone is black, that doesn't mean they're a spokeperson for black people, etc.
He shouldn't feel like he has to be tbh. I'm sure he'll do his bit in the gay community and open doors for people but other then he doesn't have to be a staple for the gays. I don't see him as one so

This is what I don't understand, why does someone in the limelight who is gay have to be our champion.

no one is asking him to give speeches every week but he is gay, and has a platform, so why not use it to shine the spotlight on the fact that lgbt kids make up 40% of the homeless youth population for example? its crazy we have pop girls voicing for the lgbt community and not even a gay himself
he just made sure it was out there because it couldn't have been done more casually.
