Of course, Deadmau5 has been wearing his mouse head costume for 10 years now -- and his attorney Dina LaPolt tells TMZ he already has a trademark for it in 30 other countries ... including Japan, Germany, Italy and the U.K.

Deadmau5 applied through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last year.

In the docs, Disney states its ears have been a thing for more than 60 years, and says granting Deadmau5 the trademark would damage its business in the U.S. and around the world.

However, the good sis deadmau5 pulled a one-two on Disney by filing a motion for them to remove the a video they used his songs for with the likeness of Disney to promote their website - all WITHOUT the permission of deadmau5. You can read the letter from his attorney here.

I personally was very confused as to why Disney thought that people would mistake their logo for Deadmau5's, when they both have been established for so many years now. But then I recalled Disney had opened an EDM label, and had EDM releases/events (remixes from the movie TRON from big EDM stars as well as festivals).

In the context of Disney EDM and deadmau5, I could see there being some brand confusion but it's a still a huge dick move, and to me feels like a personal attack to block a trademark on an established act who has been using it for over a DECADE. AND the fact that deadmau5 helped create and foster the popularity of EDM music that Disney is trying to cash out on.

Huge Disney fan and supporter, but do think they're kind of in the wrong for this. But lbr I'm SURE deadmau5 was incredibly inspired by Mickey when he came up with his look

There's your reason why they are in a legal brawl. They didn't mention anything because he wasn't trying to get a trademark for it so they didn't deem him as a threat but now that he is trying to get a trademark (in their home territory, noted, at least I think), they are coming for him. Yeah, that EDM label might have something to do with it, but I don't think it is a personal attack on him... I think it is more so that he is simply trying to get a trademark in their home territory and due to slight similarities, they are going after him.

But, I'm not taking Disney's side. This is pretty lame and I didn't connect the two until just now tbh.

Mickey Mouse is so iconic, I'm sure pretty much everybody alive knows what he looks like and knows he came first... And it would be a shame if they forced deadmau5 to stop wearing his costume.

Obviously the fact that Disney have their own record label complicates matters though.

I do see what you mean Aathew and it's annoying. This kind of corporate greed to me is evil. Deadmau5 is only one guy. The only thing similar in those two logos is the concept of a round face and two circles for ears. That's it. They're kicking up sand at him over some damn shapes?

tbh it is very similar and Mickey Mouse was the first thing i thought of when i saw deadmau5's logo. he shouldn't be able to trademark it.
