Chuck Berry and Bill Haley are the only artists to contend with Elvis in the musical department.

I suppose you're a bit right there

Gaga was pretty influential and contributed along with artists like La Roux to the resurgence of electro-pop, synth pop and dance-pop music. RedOne was even thanked by big producers and DJs of dance and EDM for helping to bring their music to the mainstream and raise awareness.
Gaga re-popularised the naming of fan bases and the long music videos and brought theatricality of the theatre to somewhere it isn't seen. Her weirdness and her eccentricity was noted by record labels and even told their artists to act and dress like her.

You're one of few in this thread who actually listed innovative pop stars.
Minus Mariah & Whitney. Not sure why you listed them.

And the irony of "being forgotten" when you talk about her daily.
Gaga helped the electro/dance-pop trend progress. She helped bring back importance to music videos (compare the amount of long "mini movie" music videos in the recent years before Gaga to after). And yes, the outrageous costumes was a big thing to credit her for in recent years. There's a reason that people like Nicki and Katy were accused of copying her and "going Gaga" when they dressed outrageously.
Also, theatricality is something Gaga deserves credit for in bringing back to Pop music, which wasn't there for a while. Theatrical performances, to be more specific (I'm not talking about elaborate performances, I'm talking about performances that look like they're out of a theatre production, like Nicki at the 2012 Grammys as an example.)

Gaga didn't help electro music go anywhere. What a big pile of non sense. Dark Horse was the first urban*pop song to hit #1 in the recent years but you don't see Katy stans swearing that she brought urban music to the mainstream because music was already shifting to that direction. Hell Gaga wasn't even the first female popstar in the recent years to get an electro pop #1 hit. That was Rihanna with 2 songs.
As far as giving importance to music videos again, that credit goes to Vevo and Youtube not some lame hasbeen.
The whole costumes thing I've already discussed. You're just running around in circles. And I don't talk about her everyday. I diss her whenever she's mentioned which is every time I log on here.

Lemme give y'all a hint: the answer is not MJ, Madonna or Kate Bush. If the artist wasn't releasing between the 20s-60s, they missed too much of the revolution of music to be considered most innovative.
A damn mess @ Bey getting more mentions in here than Frank Sinatra, James Brown, Elvis, Chuck Berry, etc. COMBINED

You're nearing Fighter status, sis.
Britney actually did something innovative with her Lolita schtick. Justin did absolutely nothing, same as Bey, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Christina, etc.

Britney literally is a vocalist and entertainer. There is nothing else to her which is part of why I don't understand how so many people like her She's not innovative I don't understand what argument can be made for Britney herself being innovative

you obviously didn't care to do research on britney.
just take her very first single for example. she is the one who decided that bomt should be her first single. she was the one who created her iconic school girl look (not her stylists or anyone else on her team). she even came up with the whole music video concept. and she was only 16. none of that can be said about katy, beyonce, rihanna etc.
she literally invented the teenage lolita pop girl persona and that's only the very beginning of her career, there's so much more. she obviously slowed down a lot in recent years but this thread is about the careers as a whole right?

These were all popstars in their own time in their own right. The Beatles vs. Elvis is highly debatable. Elvis had more innovative music whereas The Beatles were more innovative culturally.
Sis, Justin has had 0 innovation. Britney>>>>>Beyonce, and you can fume in the corner.

Elvis? Isn't the general consensus on him that he stole everything from black musicians? Very influential yes, but that's not the same thing.

They still made it to #1 just because of the sheer volume of innovations they made. Elvis made more important contributions (granted a lot of that was thanks to the time he came out and what he could do for race relations with his image), but The Beatles were non-stop innovation for almost a decade.
I'm glad at least one other person in here realizes the answer wasn't Britney, Beyonce, Rihanna, Madonna, Gaga, MJ, etc.

This is why Tumblr should not be allowed to take on racial topics. They make up BS like this and spread it everywhere till it gets accepted as fact.
Elvis grew up in the South and borrowed from R&B, a new, black genre at the time, and mixed it with bluegrass, an old, white genre at the time. He never stole anything and made sure to cite his R&B and bluegrass influences often.
The 1940s was the creation of rock'n'roll due to black and white people moving together in cities and playing African styles on European instruments.

Madonna may have not innovated much musically but image wise she made the blueprint for modern day popstars.
And her deals and endorsements with global brands, her collaborating with the art world, I mean people may have done it before her but never on that scale.
