I guess at it's core the video is really about her unshakeable need to entertain and her ability to transform, she's a such a chameleon and the ARTPOP era was jam packed with dozens and dozens of looks.
I&V did a shoot with Gaga for V magazine a few days before filming Applause and the concept there remains similar, the shoot revolved around her playing tribute to some of her biggest inspirations, David Bowie, Donatella Verscae and Michael Jackson. So I think you've really hit the nail on the head with the Bowie reference...
But I also think (much like with the VMA's) it's acts as a joinery through her entire career... the black and white scenes showcase pre-fame Gaga, the scenes with Gaga being trapped in a cage play homage to her Fame Monster era... I think she omitted Born this Way related imagery was purely because she didn't think what she did with that album was "artpop". She's openly said Artpop was the continuation to The Fame and The Fame Monster and BTW was a separate concept piece all together.
That's my contribution anyways!
And a really nice read. It's nice to know not every single Madonna stan on here has to constantly belittle our fan base. [cough] swag, lover [cough]

Honestly, your analysis for your posts is always reaching. The references in the video are cultural images that "live for the applause".
For example, the green coated Gaga is not Cruella DeVille (); it's a reference to the magician's assistant who wishes he could receive applause in the same way that the actual magician does.

Just because she hasn't explained them doesn't mean they're not there.
The difference between you and I is that, I see them for myself. You wait and watch interviews of her explaining stuff and then you take that as the be all and end all.
her saying that something was inspired by something else doesn't mean another aspect also wasn't involved.
I honestly do not believe the concept behind this video was that complex. In retrospect, it is probably one of her worst videos ever released (next to "Alejandro" and "You and I").
You have atrocious taste in videos then. Those are her two most interesting videos.
Came across this on Tumblr quite some time ago. I think this is what she's referencing more than anything:
Quote:
This early silent era film also known as “La Grenouille” in France was released in 1908 and directed/created by Segundo De Chomon. It follows a magical frog and a young woman whom upon climbing unto a fountain rock turns into a large frog, two very strange heads. then she reappears with several other people draped in gowns, flowers and eventually on horses. A rather unusual film for the era.
Gaga's references are way more obscure than most people assume. She really enjoys digging into the history of pop culture.
To the lady gaga fans that have accused me of reaching I want to repeat something I had said earlier. Just because she hasn't explained it doesn't mean it's not there or was not part of the creative process.
You guys claim she is extremely artistic and driven by art - if that is truly the case then there is certainly more behind the applause video than the simplified watered down explanations you're given in interviews. Those explanations are true yes, but they're also watered down so the masses understand them.
In addition to this: the purpose of ART especially warhols work (that she references heavily) is to provoke discussion, have people talk, agree, disagree. If you think that lady gaga explained every last reference you're wrong. It would defeat the purpose of her work. No one has the right to tell others that their interpretation is wrong.

You know what, sometimes I think nobody has an idea what's going on in that head but herself.
On more then one occassion she hinted at something that people find out later (I believe there was a painting behind her on the MTV "crib" interview that turned out to be something that we saw pop up later but it went over our heads). Anyway long story short, she's a bit eccentric and those people are the hardest to follow imo.
