Take a bow - Madonna
All the world is a stage (world is a stage)
And everyone has their part (has their part)
But how was I to know which way the story'd go
How was I to know you'd break
(You'd break, you'd break, you'd break)
You'd break my heart [/QUOTE]
The metaphor of life being a play is clear here. She's saying that everyone has a role to play, and, while some roles are more important than others, all the roles are crucial to the final result: the play, life. But while she was playing her own part, she was in character, and she didn't know how the play would end. Finally, her heart is broken, and she was taken by surprise. The climax of the play: the maiden gets her heart broken; she might have read the script, but she still never saw it coming.
My scars were reflecting the mist in your headlights
I looked like a neon zebra shaking rain off her stripes
And the rivulets had you riveted to the places that I wanted you to kiss me when we find some time alone
...
We started out sipping the water
And now we try to swallow the wave
And we try not to let those bastards get us down
We don't worry anymore cause we know when the guff comes we get brave
After all, look around
It's happening, it's happening, it's happening now
