It's tactless but I'm pretty sure it's standard protocol for all networks... It takes time to book and vet guests so they have to start the process as soon as they can.
In the age of 24 hours rolling news, the people making big decisions have no time for tact, they have to make sure when a story breaks, they have sufficient amount of material to present with it.
It doesn't sit well with me but it's understandable.
