Hathaway starts with the story of 8-year-old Landau covering himself up on a hot day because he didn’t want to get any darker. She says she was naive about the way race would affect Landau’s life, though, until he was assaulted by police.
“I thought that love would conquer all and skin color really didn’t matter,” she says.
Hathaway’s optimism ended in 2009 when 19-year-old Landau was threatened and violently beaten by Denver police after making an illegal left turn. These images are screen grabs from an interview Hathaway and Landau did recently with CBS News.
Landau suffered a traumatic brain injury, a concussion and required 45 stitches.
“I could feel the gun pressed to my head and I expected to be shot and at that point I lost consciousness,” he tells his mom.
“I was another face in the streets, and I was almost another dead black male.”
Landau received a $795,000 settlement, but the officers who beat Landau were not charged. He was the subject of an award-winning feature story in the Denver Westword News and has taken up the fight against police brutality alongside his mother. http://www.buzzfeed.com/juliafurlan/...his-race-could
That's horrific. He gets beat up beyond belief for a minor traffic incident, and of course the cop gets off scott free. That's terrible. I'm glad he got a settlement, but that money can only cover up the mess that goes on in his head towards people now.
There's no surveillance so its basically a cops word against yours, and people are more inclined to believe cops. Now there's a movement to have cops wear a camera, I believe some states have done it already and it showed amazing results so hopefully a lot of this can be avoided

Wasn't it proved that he was beaten though? And the cops weren't charged? It seems like they really are above any law..

Nope. People are more inclined to believe the white guy tbh. Show me 10 cases where a black cop assaulted a white kid and got off free with a pay cheque. Then I'll give you a 100 examples of the opposite.

If the cops had to pay out money they need to be charged criminally. There is no excuse for these people not being charged criminally when tax payers have to pay out hundreds of thousands of dollars.
