Yes, I feel like it was a concious effort on Rih's part to distinguish herself from Beyoncé. Specifically Bey but also the other RnB/pop girls. Probably because she couldn't and wouldn't compete with them. She had to become her own person. When Umbrella came out it just felt like she was this new person. I loved it actually.
I remember everyone talking about how she went against the grain and cut her hair and started dressing differently. Also, she started focussing on dance music (which was starting to become trendy in 2007). Ever since GGGB she's always been at the front of whatever sound was starting to take over. Very smart, she and her team are pretty good. They always choose the perfect song to start and era with.
Beyoncé isn't hip and isn't trendy... she just does whatever she think is cool.

They're different types of artists.
