That performance is special because it was the moment Gaga first truly unleashed what she was about and shocked the world. You can't just recreate that. It was a moment in time that could only have happened in the beginnings of her career. We will never be shocked like that again because we're used to it now.
However, we are seeing her topping herself. There was the meat dress, then the egg, and arguably then the Swine vomitting.
In terms of quality of performance, she's much better now vocally and in terms of dancing.

I disagree wholeheartedly. That Paparazzi performance was everything. She literally nailed everything, from the vocals to the dancing to the theatrics to the timing of everything so perfectly. And the vocals were impeccable.
As far as topping herself, I don't think she has performance wise and I don't think she ever will. Swine was shocking, but not theatrical. The egg and meat dress were just stunts. She's lacking the perfect balance of theatricality and creativity, combined with the vocals and overall neatness, of her performances she used to nail so well, and I think it just goes back to her creative team not being what it once was. Sad, but that's basically the reason for everything Gaga doing nowadays being somewhat messy or not up to her own standards.
However, she's lacking nowadays in something even as simple as her piano playing. She doesn't even bother to tickle the keys or learn more than basic chords anymore. DWUW, Applause, Dope performances were all great, but they were boring compared to Poker Face, Paparazzi, etc. performances.
2012 was such a good period in the fanbase, such positivity and hype and speculation.
