Well in that case, Katy was in a position lower than them once, she was a struggling starving artist trying to find a break. She knows what its like to be a new artist, and she shouldn't be putting them down.

And FYI, their 5 song EP last year with minimal promo debuted with 28k. Since then, they've massively boosted their presence and fan base. So I'm gonna have to disagree with you.

I said "if she was shading them". I agree that she could have been genuinely asking, but it does kind of come off as shade for her to be asking Sam, who lost, right when they won, that's all.

So messy. If she truly was being mean spirited and "shady" then shame on her. To be honest, I'm not even sure if she even said "who are they," it's kind of hard to tell by just lip reading. Either way, 5H is obviously not super well known by the GP but they're definitely on their way. I'm happy that they won because they are very hard working and talented.

Also, their performance on the pre show was very good.

because if she's so shady as to go "and who are they?" which is really an unnecessary and catty (no pun intended) thing to do, then she should at least recognize the fact that she's right beside somebody whom a good portion of the VMA viewers are googling "who was sitting next to Katy Perry at the VMA's?"

She was asking who they were. If you look at her face, it was straight and it was an honest question. There is NO shade. Do you think she doesn't know Sam Smith is still establishing himself as an artist? +he's way more relevant than 5H is at the moment.

I watched the VMAs with my best friend and she asked the exact same question, to which I replied, "they sing that 'ok you're pretty, your face is a work of art'" song. I know that's G.R.L but I didn't want to seem to addicted/obsessed with pop culture/pop music by acting like I knew who everyone was She was still going "wtf...how do you know that?" when I got excited for Ariana to meet Jim Carey again

She seems pretty cold when they walk by her, even though several of the girls shake Sam Smith's hand. Katy doesn't even look at them and keeps her hands in front of her face.........

exactly. sam was really polite and sweet to all of them but katy was really nasty and so rude when they walked by her. so unnecessary.

I'm glad that sam didn't let katy get him to react the same way she did. he was really kind to them and reacted appropriately. must've been awkward for her.

She asked her friend a legit question (I have no idea who they are either). She probably had no idea she was being filmed but covered her mouth just in case, to spare their feelings. Mother Perrysa indeed tbh
