Why couldn't they turn John Carter, Prince of Persia, The Sorcerer's Apprentice and The Lone Ranger into hits?

The one common thread between all of those films is that Disney didn't promote them, and when they tried to promote them, they had no idea which audience to reach out to. "The Lone Ranger" was extremely violent... but they were trying to target kids? "John Carter" had a very ambiguous title, but was a "Star Wars" sci-fi, cowboy western epic? Where is the target audience? That's why those list of films failed. The kicker is that "John Carter" and "The Lone Ranger" are more critically-praised than "Maleficent." But since "Maleficent" has a built in, straightforward target audience, there was no question on how to promote the film, therefore turning a critically-panned film, into a successful blockbuster. "The Audience" is Showbiz 101.
