Eddie Murphy coming back to do Nutty Professor 3?
Eddie Murphy might be open to donning a fat suit again. It seems like eons ago that Murphy was being celebrated and winning awards for his role in "Dreamgirls." Since then, he has starred in the box office hit "Norbit," but media and audience reaction made the movie something of a pop culture joke. Things got worse this summer when "Meet Dave" (not so bad on a plane, by the way) opened with a measly $5.2 million, one of the worst of his career. His next film, the family comedy "NowhereLand," has already seen its release date shift dramatically and might even get a new title (not a good sign). Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures and Imagine might be coming to his rescue with a third installment of "The Nutty Professor."
Based on the 1963 Jerry Lewis classic of the same name, Murphy's first "Nutty Professor" was a worldwide smash and, at the time, provided him with his first comeback. The early '90s had been tough on the superstar, with disappointments such as "The Distinguished Gentleman" and "Vampire in Brooklyn." Besides the central character of professor Sherman Klump, "Nutty" allowed Murphy to play six other roles, including Klump's womanizing alter ego Buddy Love and most of Sherman's very rotund family. In fact, the popularity of Murphy's creative characters inspired an almost as successful sequel, "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps."
Universal and Imagine are looking for pitches for a possible third "Nutty," but have stated that they won't go forward without Murphy's participation. The comedian won't sign up unless he approves both the director and screenplay. Yet, considering his follow-up to "NowhereLand," a comedy entitled "A Thousand Words," reunites him for a third time with "Norbit" and "Meet Dave" director Brian Robbins, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize it's in his best interests to make it work.
