Is the fact that it's not uncommon somehow meant to make it ok?
It might only be a slight prick, but there's still pain and a little bit of blood. That (to me at least) seems like an unnecessary amount of pain to impose on a baby, just so you can think it's cuter for have little sparkly things dangling from its earlobes.
And there are risks, which are highly unlikely, like infection, or the fact that it could come out in their cot and they could choke on it. They're highly unlikely, but they're risks nonetheless.
In Australia, girls don't get their ears pierces until they're old enough to go to their mums and ask if they can. And even then, most mothers will say no until they're maybe 10?
I guess it's different in different cultures though.
