For now, she needs to consciously make a decision to move past the critics' words and she needs some defense mechanisms to help her get there (such as calling the critics mean).
If 'Shake It Off' was by Ariana Grande or CharliXCX, it would be a fun catchy song, but you probably wouldn't have thought twice about what the lyrics were or whether they meant anything. I mean, they are pretty generic. Knowing that it's a song by Taylor, and seeing how sincerely excited she is about it in the livestream and the music video, does take it to another level for me. She has reached the point she was determined to get to four years ago - she is in that big old city. She is big enough and mature enough that is actually capable of shaking off the criticism. She no longer needs to have her defenses up - she's confident putting herself out there and she is happier for it.
I find that quite inspiring. 'Mean' is one of my all-time favorites, but I do find myself maturing with Taylor and getting to the point she is at with 'Shake It Off'.
The praise.
