The majority of pop music consumers don't care though.
But for people who do care, it's not a recent thing at all. Not writing your own songs was the norm for popular music prior to the influx of singer-songwriters in the 60s.
I personally find myself gravitating towards self-written material though; artists who are able to compose their own music tend to make better music

There are some exceptions (we wouldn't have pop delights from boy bands and girl groups without teams of songwriters, some classic pop like Britney's early singles, etc.) but for the most part, I will take an album written by one great songwriter over an album cobbled together from multiple producing-songwriting teams any day of the week.
