I think it shows that pop stars cn be artists in their own right. Many people look at pop stars as puppets of their labels to make money, but if they have writing credits on their songs, it shows that the pop star put some of their own personality into their work. At least that's how I see it!

If you write your song by yourself, you're a true artist. Otherwise you're just a product. That's how I feel.

The late 90s/ early 00s crew of pop stars (especially Britney) showed how manufactured many pop stars were, and people started to want a higher quality from artists, like no more lip synching.

IT's important because it allows most people to actually connect with the singer themselves (as opposed to their music) on an intimate level that just isn't as attainable when they don't write their own stuff.
The writing alone is a confession and expression of who they are, and as humans, we latch onto that.
Also, it's an art form in and of itself, so we appreciate the talent of it as well.

The singer-songwriters EXTENDS FAR back, way before any Taylor Swift, Gaga or any singer from this generation. If pop stars today do write more, it's most likely due to a monetary incentive than an artistic one.

I think the artists themselves made it a big deal, and lie or brag about it in interviews to make themselves more legitimate.

Songwriting is very important and I'm glad people realize that now. Pop was very manufactured in the 2000's but nobody cared back then.

But for people who do care, it's not a recent thing at all. Not writing your own songs was the norm for popular music prior to the influx of singer-songwriters in the 60s.

I personally find myself gravitating towards self-written material though; artists who are able to compose their own music tend to make better music There are some exceptions (we wouldn't have pop delights from boy bands and girl groups without teams of songwriters, some classic pop like Britney's early singles, etc.) but for the most part, I will take an album written by one great songwriter over an album cobbled together from multiple producing-songwriting teams any day of the week.

I never get this. If you're a singer, your talent is your voice and the way you use it is your expression of art. Just because someone is gifted with a good/great/flawless voice, does not mean they necessarily have songrwriting skills, nor is it a need for them to use to use it even if they had it.

It shouldn't make you any less of an artist if you by choice or not, do not write your own songs.
