Starbucks barista exposes Katy Perry's kindness
Quote:
On Tuesday, Jason King, 25, who has been a barista for about a year at the Starbucks adjacent the Embassy Suites hotel in downtown Chicago, was mixing hot drinks, when he noticed the name "Katheryn" on a cup. The order was for a tall vanilla soy latte.
Then he looked up at the customer. Dark sunglasses. Wacky, knitted hat. Green hair.
Bingo: Katy Perry.
"I kept telling myself: don't freak out," he says, in a phone interview with USA TODAY.
The problem for King is that he happens to be a Katy Perry fanatic. He just saw her documentary, Katy Perry: Part of Me, on Netflix. And he'd recently mentioned to his Mom that Katy Perry was one of the two people he wanted to meet in his life.
Suddenly, she was standing right there waiting for the latte that he was mixing.
Then, he called out, "Katheryn, I have your tall soy vanilla latte."
When she approached the counter, he quietly fessed-up. "I know who you are," he whispered. "I just want to say that you're amazing and awesome. But I know you want to keep a low profile -- so I won't freak out."
Perry leaned-in over the counter towards him. "I can tell this drink is going to be really good," she said. Then, she asked: "Is there anything I can do for you?"
King could hardly believe what he'd just heard. He wanted to ask for a selfie with her, but he knew it would blow her cover. "Can I get a handshake?" he asked. Perry handed her drink and sandwich to an assistant and shook his hand.
