Rihanna is the most influential artist of 2007 and 2008. Its amazing how she hasn't stopped since March of 2007. Hopefully she'll keep going strong and add more amazing work to her portfolio.
How is Discipline--a lukewarm album by my standards--influenced by Rihanna? It's just the same electropop sound (for a few of the songs) that has been around since 2005. If anything, it's Justin Timberland, which takes a lot for me to admit.
Rihanna is popular... but that doesn't make her influential, sorry.

of course RIHANNA is influential !!!!
of all the young black female artists, she's the one who's pop, rock, ballads, dance, european sounding, r&b.
with her "umbrella" and "don't stop the music", she kinda reinvented the way american music should be made with an injected european vibe to it and it did work so now everyone ESPECIALLY BEYONCE wants to imitate her
puh-lease , "RADIO" from beyoncé is such a BAD imitation of don't stop the music but it will NEVER have the hugme immense international success of "don't stop the music"
and "if I were a boy" is a "lemme try to be pop also"
Also, Rihanna is the first black female young artist (who once was a one hit wonder with her pseudo urban jam "pon de replay") to become one of madonna's fans' fave artists. a lot of madonna fans have respect for rihanna
especially thanx to songs like "don't stop the music" (which rihanna's vogue in a way), disturbia's video (which looks like a madonna bedtime storie's video) and especially tnaks to this fantabulous rendition of VOGUE at the Fashion Rocks:

Barf, the "European" vibe has been around for longer than Rihanna.
The point is, everyone loves Rihanna, who doesn't wanna be like her? As well as Lil Wayne blowing the ROCKSTAR trend out of the roof, with help from KANYE. It's about popularity with things like this.
When I think of 2008 in music, I don't think of anyone else but LIL WAYNE or RIHANNA.
Maybe we have different ideas on what an "influential" artist is. IMO, being influential is a musical thing. Rihanna has had a big social impact--kiddies and such--but I don't see anyone going out of their way to "sound" like her except Beyonce.
