I change mine every couple days or so. I think in the time I've been active I've had more than a half dozen.
In fact, I have about 4 made up and ready to go.

Before, I change my avatars every month I guess...
But right now I've got 3 rotating avatars and I'm keeping it for a while.

Once a month more or less, I can keep it longer though, it depends on whether I find a video to create a gif from (ask someone for an avi-sized gif actually
