Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles top a poll of the world's best singers... as John Lennon ends up at no. 5
She had her first hit over 40 years ago, has 20 Grammys and has been crowned the 'Queen of Soul'.
And now Aretha Franklin has another honour to add to her collection - she's been named the the Greatest Singer of All Time in a poll by Rolling Stone magazine.
The 66-year-old diva is the only female in the top 10 list, of which seven are no longer living.
Following close behind is blues legend Ray Charles at two, who was once labelled the 'only true genius in the business' by Frank Sinatra.
At three was Elvis Presley, with Sam Cooke at four and John Lennon at five.
Completing the top 10, is Marvin Gay at six, Bob Dylan at seven, Otis Redding at eight, Stevie Wonder at nine and James Brown at 10.
The survey of the world's top 100 singer was compiled from a shortlist of 179 and was whittled down by musicians, producers, music industry insiders and Rolling Stone editors.
Other names in the top 100 include Sir Paul McCartney at 11, Sir Mick Jagger at 16, Etta James at 22, Michael Jackson at 25, Dusty Springfield at 35, Elton John at 38, Christina Aguilera at 58 and Mariah Carey at 79.
Also they have a small feature on each artist on Rollingstone.com. Here's what they said about Christina.
Quote:
"I knew she could really sing," Herbie Hancock said of his 2005 collaboration with teen pop's most accomplished vocalist. "But I didn't know she could sing like that. She knocked me out." Christina Aguilera has had the finesse and power of a blues queen ever since she was a child star (she appeared on Star Search at age 11). Even in her teen-pop "Genie in a Bottle" days, she was modeling her dramatic, melismatic technique on old-school soul heroines like Etta James; you could hear it first come to fruition on 2002's "Beautiful." Patti Smith, of all people, says Aguilera's rendition of James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" at last year's Grammys was "one of the best performances that I've ever seen.Ê.Ê.Ê. I sat and watched it, and at the end, I just involuntarily leapt to my feet. It was amazing."

LMFAO!!
Christina's GH album is set to have poor 1st week sales:
A TAYLOR-MADE SWIFT BOAT RIDE TO THE TOP
Big Machine Country Diva Rides TV, Awards, Critical Praise to 500k+ in Sales, Archuleta, T-Pain, Now 29 Also on Tap
November 12, 2008
That was Swift.
Q4 gets underway in earnest this week, with Big Machine/Universal Republic country phenom Taylor Swift leading the way, according to preliminary reports from record retailers whose doors are still open around Obamaland.
With Ellen DeGeneres devoting her entire show to the singer yesterday, and a performance of “Love Story” tonight at the nationally televised CMA Awards on ABC tonight, where she’s nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year, Swift’s new album Fearless is headed for first-week sales of between 500-550k, easily #1 next Tuesday.
The album is #1 at iTunes, while critics have been effusive, with Rolling Stone giving the disc four stars and the N.Y. Times raving, “Ms. Swift has quickly established herself as the most remarkable country music breakthrough artist of the decade. One of Nashville’s most exciting songwriters."
Jive/ZLG American Idol runner-up David Archuleta is headed for an impressive 225-240k for his self-titled debut album, good for second place, thanks to the smash single, “Crush.”
Labelmate T-Pain gives the House of Weiss two in the Top 3 with his latest effort, Thr33 Ringz, his tribute to the art of the Auto-Tune, looking at between 175-190k.
UMe’s Now 29 returns with first-week sales in the 160-170k range, a far cry from its glory days, but probably good enough for #4.
Reprise veteran New Age goddess Enya is back, looking like 85-95k, while RCA/RMG songstress Christina Aguilera’s greatest hits Target exclusive should do at least 75k, maybe more, with both locks for the Top 10.
WB’s Seal looks in the 30-40k range.
Also headed for this week's Top 10 is Target's exclusive Christina Aguilera looking like a lock for 75K, maybe higher.
One caveat: With Veteran's Day this Tuesday and many consumers off work and out of school, Tuesday sales could be somewhat higher than normal.
The market was up 1% over last week, down 29% vs. the same week last year and now down 13% year to date. You may now return to watching your 401(k) drop.
75k? Disgusting.
Britney managed 255k with her GH album, with 0 promotion and a poor image.

Lol, there's NO excuse for it selling so poor. 75k is horrific. She promoted the album at the VMA's. THE VMA'S FFS!
Let's be real. It's obvious her record labell thought it will sell a lot by releasing it exclusivley, so Target will promote the hell out of the album.
Let's not forget that she filmed an advert for the GH album and did a lot of interviews, she even dissed new comer Lady Gaga, just to drum up attention for her GH album.
Usually, GH albums are not supposed to be so promoted, but this one was. And it bombed.
It is also flopping over here in the UK too. It's sitting at #10. .
Britney's Greatest Hit's went to #2 and it sold 115k in it's first week, breaking 1st week sales record for a GH album by a female artist in the UK.
Oh poor Christina!

Oh, and to the fool who said Blackout sold 255k and not the GH album, WRONG!
Blackout sold 297k. Her GH album sold 255k. Plus she released the GH album when the media and the public began to turn on her and called her trash and the whole KFed drama started.
Yet it still did better than Christina's GH album.
Further evidence that Christina is becoming a hasbeen.

Here is a little fact you cant comprehend but i put it out t here anyways. Britney CD came out in a time when cds where selling ok not good but ok. Do you honestly think that cds are selling the same as they where when her Britney cd came out. BTW didn't Britney have 3 music video for her greatest hits. I pretty sure she did but i wont ask you since you cant keep up
Didn't also one or two of her songs not manage to hit the bbhot100 oops i guess you forgot about that too

Uh, yeah, because selling 255k these days is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hard right?
Nope. Britney's GH may have came out 4 years ago, but 255k is still a reachable 1st week number for today.
