You can last ten years and not be a legend, but you'll never find someone who is regarded as a legend and hasn't been around for at least ten years.

It's more about impact. There are some artists who were around for just a short time that we still talk about and listen to, and some that have been/were around for 10+ years that didn't contribute anything special to music. I mean, The Beatles were only together for like 7 years.
