I had a teacher who gave us a lecture on it in high school... It was actually a really long speech on why saying things like "flaming" or "fa**ot" or "no homo" have more impact than most people our age (at the time) understood.

Actually, after college I moved back to my hometown for a year, and we ****ed a few times. I hadn't even realized he was gay until he hit me up on Facebook and asked me to have a beer and catch up. He was one of my favorite teachers and I managed to have him as my instructor for 3 years.

My 8th grade teacher told us the meaning and history behind it many years ago. Didn't know the "flaming" part until now though.
