Straight, White, Middle Class Males in the 15-35 range are BY FAR the most common people to carry out mass shootings in North America. From Sandy Hook to Boston Bombings, the Batman shooter to Columbine, images of young white men who fit these descriptors fill the media as the people responsible for shootings and acts of mass killing. Time and time again we hear about how an ordinary day in an ordinary place like a school or movie theatre is suddenly disrupted by a young white man who begins shooting.
Have you ever felt scared or uncomfortable when being in a public place and suddenly a white man who fits that exact description which almost all the shooters fit (young, average-guy-looking, in that age range, appears middle class) comes in? Have you suddenly eyed the exit, thought of where to dock, had a bit of a panic attack? How does all these non-stop shootings and mass killing events shape your perception of white men in North America?
