Reason #1: She has the green light to release as much music as she wants.
Azealia released quite a bit of music over the past two years, but she's been forced to work with Interscope on what gets out and what doesn't. For the most part, it sounds like she wasn't a fan of that process. Now that she's on her own, she can record and release at her leisure. Don't flood the market, but do take advantage of being in control.
Reason #2: She's excited about the opportunity to become "the cool indie chick."
Most artists aren't happy when they get dropped from drop a major because it signifies that a label doesn't think the artist is worth their time or money. But Azealia seemed thrilled to be free some Interscope. "I'm gonna have a fresh start," she wrote on Twitter. "I'm so excited…Now I get to be the cool indie chick I imagined I would be when I was 14!!!" That doesn't sound like a girl who's unhappy.
Reason #3: Her story is more intriguing now.
Azealia's story has been the same for about a year now. The only question anyone wanted to ask was, "So where's your album?" Even though she's never released a proper debut, she's one of biggest free agents on the market and she's a girl everyone's going to be watching in the near future. We wouldn't be surprised if she took a break, devised a game plan and then started showing up everywhere to essentially promote herself as a new artist.
Reason #4: The first song she released after
getting dropped from her label was good. We've made it through three reasons now and haven't mentioned "Heavy Metal and Reflective" yet. But it's worth noting that Azealia got off to a good start with that song, which got a primarily warm reception and is already soaring up the iTunes charts. It's proof that she does have a fan base that will support her post-Interscope career.
Reason #5: She'll finally get to release her debut album. No more excuses.
We don't know if she'll call it Broke With Expensive Taste. But at some point in the near future, we expect Azealia to put out her debut album. Now that she doesn't have to answer to Interscope anymore, she doesn't have to cater to anyone else when she releases it. "Coming Soon" actually means coming soon now with regards to the status of her debut.
Reason #6:
Despite getting dropped, it doesn't seem like she's lost any of the online support she had before.
Google "Heavy Metal and Reflective" and you'll see that just about every rap blog on the Internet posted Azealia's song. It's proof that people are still watching her and willing to support, whether the music appeals to them or not. That's something not every artist can say, whether they're signed to a major label or not.
Reason #7: Going independent will give her a chance to press the reset button on her career.
As we mentioned at the beginning of this list, Twitter beefs have become Azealia's claim to fame. But now, she's getting an opportunity to leave her reputation for beefing in the past and move forward. That's not to say we want her to completely change her feisty personality. But we do want to see her focus on her career and not petty conflicts.
