I've said this before and I'll say it again. Nicki is the current Queen of Rap for her generation. She is the one who went above and beyond any of her peers. Clothing line, fragrances, movies, fashion, etc. Nicki can call herself that because she earned and fought for that title, the same way Kim did for over a decade.
Do not ever take away that title from Kim because Kim will always be the Queen of Rap of her generation. BIG crowned Kim the Queen because he was the King. When he died, she fought hard for that title and made it clear that she was the one running things. Even though Kim was rough on the charts, she built along with some of her peers, the foundations of the current female rap game. Kim was the first female to embrace gays and risked her reputation with the Hip Hop community. The first to embrace the fashion world in such a huge way, her style will always unmatched and her collaborations with some of the best from the fashion world. Kim did movies, television, commercials, endorsements.
It's not about how much a bitch can sell, it's about impact, influence and respect. You can hate Nicki all you want but doesn't change anything.
I have love for both.
But I side with Nicki because she came thru on her promises. Kim did NOT.
Kim's clothing line, book, and sleuth of other things all fell through. Her constant promises for new music was my nail in the coffin for her. She HAD the title and lost it all on her own.
TBH... I've never looked at Kim the same after Remy did this to her:
How did Kim last over a decade? Her debut was in 1996,so you mean to tell me that she was still on top in 2006? But how because by then she was flopping bad. Her album still not gold after 9 years. Her last top hit was in 2003, during the time her career peaked and end. Nicki was kind enough to just put the nail in the coffin
Her last album, The Naked Truth, was released in 2005, 9 years after her debut. It's her most critically acclaimed album to date and it got 5 mics from The Source, back when it used to be relevant. HUGE achievement for the time. It completely flopped in sales, but Kim was sentenced the day the album was released and went to jail soon after. She even talks about it on the album. Maybe you should listen to it. Ligters Up was a moderate hit but there were no other singles and no promo. It wasn't going to sell itself.
It's true. I had plenty of links about it. There was even a video on YouTube a while ago from some documentary about the history of hip hop and label executives talked about the physical releases being restricted within the US.
Rap wasn't very mainstream back then. Jay Z is a great example of that. Until his first collaboration with Beyonce in 2003, (Bonnie and Clyde 03) he only had one hit outside of the US, Ghetto Anthem. The rest had pretty low chart positions. Labels used to spend money on physical singles overseas only for rappers with mainstream appeal, which is why Eminem and 50 have tons of worldwide hits. iTunes and digital releases that cost the labels nothing is how rap started becoming an international force in the music world.
As someone else said, I really enjoy your posts. I can tell you are very level-headed with your responses which is lovely.
I love Nicki and despite hating PNP and Anaconda I still have faith in her.
But until she manages to get a smash hit with a real 100% hip hop/ rap song, she's not the queen of hip hop/ rap. It's still Kim and Missy, who both got plenty of smash hits with purely rap songs. No shade, no disrespect.
It's impossible to get a #1 like that honestly in this day & age....Pop Radio just won't play it like they did two decades ago.
