Tony Bennet and Lady Gaga--Anything Goes
Anything Goes was a disappointing follow up to Gaga and Bennett's previous song,
The Lady is A Tramp. The song starts out promising because it was nice to hear the style of enunciation that Gaga does when she performs Jazz. However, as the song played on, the more forgettable it got. You can hear in Gaga's voice that she was trying so hard to create chemistry with Tony in the song. Ironically, that's what caused the track to be on the verge of inauthenticity. Tony himself has a particular style of singing that I'm not fond of. He sounds like he only gives in the minimum effort to sing a different note in a song, but that's excusable because he probably doesn't have the lung capacity that he used to have. Objectively speaking though, Bennett doesn't sound as enthusiastic as the song intends him to be. As a result, Gaga was tasked to make up for that lack of energy and become overly joyful herself. What is severely lacking from
Anything Goes is a sense of identity from either singer. It sounded like a strict cover and nothing more. It's understandable that they are paying homage, but when artists cover a song, they should create an incentive to listen to
their version as opposed to the original. The song need improvement, but it's an enjoyable listen nonetheless.
