Nelly? Check. Justin? Check. Britney? Well, where do people think Danja got his style from? He kicked it all off, made his own significant contributions throughout that period, and the artists who drew from him secured big hits and collabs.
nobody cares when a poc takes something from a culture that belongs to white people, i mean has flavor flav even been called out for wearing a viking helmet?
I think it also depends on who's wearing the garment as well. I mean Flavor Flav, does anyone take him seriously?
European beauty standards are present in Asia to a great extent, and Western brands are associated with higher status. We still live in a post-colonial world and a black person "appropriating" Asian culture is NOT the same as a white person.

I think there is an ample difference between what Timbaland was doing at the time and DSTM. DSTM sounds like it came straight from a remix played at the club, I recall a critic doubting it'd smash in the US because of how repetitive dance music wasn't really a thing yet. Rihanna was the perfect vessel to make the sound work for everyone else in pop.

"Not the same" as in the POC gets looked down upon on for it? or praised?
but people only have a problem with appropriation when a white person is appropriating a culture of color, a white american can dress as an irish leprechaun or as a dutch and nobody would think twice about it.
Because Dutch people and Irish people are not discriminated against in the US for being Ducth or Irish. There are no negative consequences from being proud of their culture and displaying it. Unlike people of colour.
