An established act already has a fan base, who should be buying the second album when it's out, which is not the case with Lana as she alienated her fan base.
A newcomer has to convince people that he's worth of their money, so it's a much harder feat. Having a hit single doesn't mean that your album is going to sell, as we can see by Magic!'s Rude selling more than Stay With Me but Sam's still killing them in the album charts. Having done promo can increase your album sales but the promo-argument cannot be used for Sam, when the promo he's done in the US is now over a month ago and he's still so high in the album charts.
People are here for Sam Smith, as soon as they get to hear him, simple as that.
