The decline

There were periods in 2012 when the #1 digital song sold less than 200K as well (only 1 or 2 weeks compared to the 5-7+ this year, but still).

Sales have declined, but also there aren't as many great songs smashing right now. The entirety of 2014 has been a weak year for mainstream Top 40,in my opinion.
